single layer chocolate cake with a malted milk swiss meringue buttercream and salted caramel puddles

as the nights draw in earlier and earlier and the temperature drops down i have been wanting to spend a cosy weekend at home baking a fun and delicious cake. this cake has been on my mind for a while, i um-d and ah-d for a while over the flavour for the buttercream. recently one of my good friends, indira, was talking about using malted milk in baking and that’s what gave me the idea for this smbc! you can find her instagram here and her substack here. the malty flavour is so lovely with the soft sponge and the deep, caramel, salty flavours from the sauce.
